I am writing to ask that you support the Gamban4Greyhounds call to end greyhound racing in the UK.

Every year, thousands of greyhounds are overbred and killed if they are not fast enough to win prize money. The surviving dogs are then subjected to risk of injury and death on the track, and live their lives in confinement when they aren’t racing. 

For the fortunate dogs that finish their racing careers, the general public adopts these wonderful dogs and takes on the costs of the dog racing industry’s overproduction of greyhounds.

This model is unacceptable, and must end.

Greyhounds deserve better. We would never allow our own dogs to be a gambling product and risk their life just so bookies can profit. Greyhounds should be bred responsibly to be our companions, just like every other dog breed.

Animal welfare experts have determined that the dog racing industry self-regulator, the Greyhound Board of Great Britain, does not protect greyhounds. Dog racing should therefore be phased out over a gradual period to ensure all greyhounds currently stuck in the dog racing pipeline are adopted.

All polling shows Brits support a phased end to dog racing. Petitions in Scotland and Wales have had record-breaking numbers. A Parliamentary E-Petition also triggered a debate in Westminster.

As a nation, we are better than betting on the lives of dogs just to further enrich exploitative gambling companies. Please let me know if you support an end to greyhound racing.
